The second international research conference of the AESOP Planning/Conflict thematic group is hosted by the Instituto de Ciências Sociais – Universidade de Lisboa (ICS-UL) in partnership with the Centro de Investigação e Estudos de Sociologia – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (CIES-IUL) and sponsored by the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP).
This conference aims at bringing together different perspectives on conflicts around urban planned developments, with a focus on the role planning practices may play both in defining/framing and in possibly solving/reframing conflicts. This event builds on the experience of the conference “planning/conflict – critical perspectives on contentious urban developments” held at TU Berlin in October 2011.
The conference invites contributions focusing on (although not necessarily limited to):
* the changing features of urban development policies and their impacts on local societies and communities;
* the changing nature of urban planning practices and their influence on public opinion formation, including forms of protest and social mobilization in opposition to planned developments;
* the effectiveness and legitimacy of established planning practices in responding to protest and social mobilization and in dealing with possibly resulting conflicts;
* the transformative potential that may be entailed in reflexively addressing protest and social mobilization and in dealing with conflicts;
* the potential integrative and innovative contribution of political agonism and social conflict to the democratization of urban policy and planning.

Abu Dhabi is on the move
A trip in Abu Dhabi, a city in strong development and growth, becomes a quick guide where I tried to collect and to tell, through a sequence of images and interpretations, some the impressions received.

Department of Architecture, “Federico II” University, via Forno Vecchio 36
Aula Andriello, 9 am-6 pm
This one-day conference will bring together scholars from Italy and the United States to explore the urban implications of actor-network theory. The focus will be on the networks of humans, nature, and technologies that comprise cities and without which cities could neither function nor thrive. These assemblages are the constituent forms that characterize such social concerns as sea-level rise, slum formation, informality, and inter-ethnic conflict. Assemblage thinking places action in its material context by recognizing that humans always act with both tools and nature.
Assemblage thinking also sits at the center of how we think about planning for the city. It enables us to understand how formal and informal processes emerge and function within and across the settings of city life.
The speakers will present case studies that reflect on the formal and informal assemblages that comprise cities. They will include Robert Beauregard (Columbia University), Laura Lieto, and Attilio Belli (“Federico II” University). Invited speakers – Alessandro Balducci (Politecnico di Milano), Serena Vicari Haddock (University of Milano-Bicocca), Francesco Moccia (“Federico II” University), and Stefano Moroni (Politecnico di Milano) — will then debate the theoretical and practical planning issues posed by assemblage thinking.
This conference is free and open to the public. It is the first in a series of events and projects involving scholars from “Federico II” and Columbia University.

International research conference: Planning / conflict – cities and citizenship in times of crisis
Lisbon, October 9-11, 2013.

Seminar on “Case study and comparative research” in Florence
The 1st national meeting on research methodology for PhDs in town planning and urban policies took place in Florence last 19th March at the department of Architecture. The seminar was devoted to the discussion of the case study and comparative research methodologies. Several PhD candidates, professors and lecturers took part in the conference. The speakers gave lectures, took part in panels, and chaired parallel sessions on the two main themes of the meeting. Discussions on the opportunities and uses of the two methodologies, and on the issues that the PhD candidates raised regarding their own research path were particularly interesting. The next seminar in this new series of inter-doctoral conferences is going to take place next September at Roma Tre University, as announced at the end of the meeting.
La città giusta by Ugo Ischia
Ugo Ischia’s book raises some questions which keep relevancy despite its posthumous publication. The relationship between politics and urban planning as an ethical issue is a key-lecture for retracing the debate developed in Italian urbanism between the fifties and the seventies. A reconstruction of points of view concerning land revenue and environmental protection is effectively provided by the Author, who has recourse to the past of the discipline in order to prefigure a possible future.
